What is Digital Accessibility Compliance?
Digital accessibility compliance is the set of practices, audits and adaptations that ensure a site or app meets the legal and technical accessibility standards, such as WCAG 2.2 AA, the Brazilian Inclusion Law (LBI), the U.S. ADA and the European EN 301 549. It involves both technical and organizational conformity.
What does the Brazilian Inclusion Law (LBI) require for sites?
The LBI (Law 13,146/2015) determines that public-administration sites and portals must be accessible. For the private sector, the law establishes accessibility obligation as a principle, courts have used the LBI to hold companies liable. Decree 5,296/2004 already required accessibility in government sites.
What are the 4 POUR principles of WCAG?
POUR is the acronym for Perceivable (information presented in alternative ways), Operable (navigable by keyboard and without time limits), Understandable (clear language, predictable behavior) and Robust (compatible with current and future assistive technologies). Every WCAG success criterion falls under one of these principles.
How to monitor accessibility compliance continuously?
Accessibility compliance isn't a one-time project, new content, plugins and updates can introduce regressions. Continuous monitoring combines weekly automated scans (axe Monitor, Siteimprove, Deque), regression tests in the CI/CD pipeline and periodic manual reviews with real users with disabilities.
Does an Accessibility Overlay solve accessibility problems?
No. Accessibility overlays (third-party JavaScript tools like accessiBe, UserWay) are rejected by the accessibility community and by organizations like the NFB and ACB. They mask barriers without fixing them, often worsen the experience for screen reader users and have already been the subject of lawsuits.
