What is a pre-migration audit?
A pre-migration audit is the complete analysis of the current site before any change: content inventory, mapping of URLs with traffic and backlinks, identification of custom features, assessment of plugin dependencies and analysis of historical Search Console data. It's the "medical exam before surgery". It lets you plan the migration without surprises.
What does Search Console reveal in the pre-migration audit?
Pre-migration Search Console shows: top URLs by impressions and clicks (candidates for priority redirect), queries that bring traffic per URL (helps define post-migration content architecture), existing coverage errors (404, excluded, noindex) that need to be resolved, and current Core Web Vitals as a baseline for post-migration comparison.
How to map external backlinks before the migration?
Use Ahrefs, Semrush or Majestic to export all external backlinks, including the destination URL (specific page, not just the domain). URLs with many high-authority backlinks must have a guaranteed 301 redirect to the equivalent post-migration URL. Backlinks pointing to URLs that will disappear without an equivalent redirect mean losing the accumulated authority.
Which features to audit before migrating platforms?
List of features to map: forms and CRM integrations, e-commerce (products, variations, orders, pricing rules), authentication and customer area, shipping and tax calculation, transactional email triggers, ERP/WMS/marketplace integrations, existing redirects, analytics scripts and GTM tags, and domain security certificates.
How to audit existing content pre-migration?
Full crawl with Screaming Frog: lists all URLs with status code, title, description, H1, word count, canonical and metadata. Combine with GA4 data (pageviews per URL in the last 12 months) to classify content into: keep (relevant traffic), update (traffic with opportunity), consolidate (thin/duplicate content) and remove (zero traffic, no backlinks, no value).

In depth
Pre-migration technical audit, explained.
What is a pre-migration audit?
It’s the diagnosis that precedes any migration: it surveys indexed URLs, backlinks, current performance, content structure, taxonomies and technical dependencies of the source platform. It’s the map that makes the migration predictable and surprise-free.
Why is it indispensable?
Migrating without auditing is migrating blind. The audit reveals what needs to be preserved, what can be improved and where the risks are, avoiding SEO loss, orphan content and rework. The better the diagnosis, the safer the execution.
What's in the report?
Inventory of URLs and SEO priorities, backlink profile, performance baseline (Core Web Vitals), content structure and taxonomies, integrations and a redirect plan. All with recommendations prioritized by impact.
And after the audit?
You receive a clear migration plan, with scope, mapped risks and an estimate. From it, we execute the migration safely, or your team executes with our playbook. The audit is the foundation of every successful migration.
